---------- St. Benedict's Painted Church With Captain Cook and additional expeditionary voyages came the Missionaries. St. Benedict's Painted Church is an example of early Island Christianity and is a "must see" experience. This small Catholic church was built and decorated between 1899 and 1904 by Father John Velge, a Belgian priest. The small structure with a white steeple contains religious frescoes painted in bright primary colors on the walls and ceilings. Father Velge, known as the Hawaiian Michelangelo, in a means of communicating with the indigenous people, painted the scenes from the Bible and even Hell to teach the Scripture. The interior trompe-l'oeil painting is after a Gothic Cathedral in Burgos, Spain. The columns are decorated with Hawaiian texts.
