 SOUTH

The Sites!

Travel south to the southern end of the Big Island and see the magnificent Green Sands Beach and South Point.

----------

Hawaii was first settled by Polynesians sailing from other Pacific islands between AD. 300 and 600. The exact date is unknown and probably will remain so forever. But sometime after the beginning of the Christian era, Polynesians first set foot on these islands. Linguistic and cultural evidence suggest that the first inhabitants came from the Marquesas Group, to the north of Tahiti.

South Point is as it's name, the absolute farthest point south in the United States. A great place to picnic and just relax to the breathtaking views. (Take one of our Hummers and drive to the point!) It is also the place the very first people landed in Hawaii about 1600 years ago! Fertile farm land and rolling pastures give way to magnificent ocean views. (No wonder they stayed!)

Kula Kai Caverns and Lava Tubes
Off Hwy. 11, P.O. Box 6313, Ocean View Phone: 808/929-7539

Before you make the trip to Volcano to see Pele's volcanic eruption, take a look at her underground handiwork for the past 1,000 years or so. Ric Elhard and Rose Herrera have explored and mapped out the labyrinth of lava tubes and caves which crisscross their property on the southwest rift zone on the slopes of Mauna Loa near South Point. As soon as you enter their thatched yurt field office (which resembles something out of an Indiana Jones movie), you know you're in for an amazing tour. Your choices range from an easy one-hour tour on a well-lit underground route for $12 adults, $8 children ages 5 to 12; to a more adventuresome spelunking two-hour trip for $45 adults. $25 children ages 8 to 12; to the deluxe half-day explorations for $125 adults (minimum age 12 years), which includes lunch. Helmets, lights, gloves, and knee pads are all included. The Herrera's recommend that you wear long pants and closed shoes.

Tours by appointment. Between the 79and 78 mile markers on Hwy 11, turn towards the ocean on Kula Kai Rd. Turn right on the 7th street down, Lauhala Rd. Look for thatched "yurt" field office on right.
